Their last album with Gerald as a member was created around 2003, although the group is still creating music as of 2020. Levert also ventured towards another group consisting of Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, and himself, called LSG. However, after 1990, Gerald developed his own solo career, but continued to contribute to three additional albums with the LeVert group which led in 2001 to an album of their greatest hits produced by Rhino records. Between 1985 to 1990, the group released annual albums that grew more popular by the year. Gerald, his brother Sean Levert, and childhood friend Marc Gordon, came together in 1983 to form the group LeVert. This led him to aspire to his father’s success as an entertainer and to imitate some of the iconic characteristics of the group. While in Shaker Heights, Gerald was influenced by his father’s work as a vocalist in the popular Ojay’s group. His parents moved to SHAKER HEIGHTS when Gerald was a young man. He rose to prominence in 1986 as a member of the R&B trio LeVert, which included his brother, Sean, and childhood friend Marc Gordon. The father of four children, Levert sold millions of albums and had numerous R&B hits over his two-decade career. LaBelle said she hopes to sing at Levert's funeral. Patti LaBelle, who had worked and recorded with Levert, said he 'was like a son' to her. For his fans, his greatest love was touching the hearts and souls of all people through his music,' the statement said. To his family and friends he was a man of strong character, who had an infectious personality and a zest for life. 'As everybody knows, Gerald was a man who loved and breathed music. The cause of death was not immediately known, and Levert's family released a statement asking for privacy.

Levert's label, Atlantic Records, confirmed that Levert died at his home in Cleveland, Ohio. Gerald Levert, the fiery R&B singer and son of O'Jays vocalist Eddie Levert, died Friday.
